CORNELIUS COLLIANDER – TESTS

GLAZES OUT OF FINNISH ROCKS

At high temperature every rock melts and by adding different minerals it is possible to develop unique and beautiful glazes.

When proceeding to make a glaze out of a local rock one has to ground it into fine powder and make a melt test. This gives an idea of how this particular rock behaves. After that you most often have to adjust the mix in order to create a proper glaze. If you have a chemical analyze of the rock it is of great help in understanding the results.

Geologically Finland is an interesting country and working with natural rock glazes is exciting, instructive and fun.

Cornelius has his ceramic workshop in Parainen.
