MALLU JÄRKKÄ

WOODFIRED

Mallu Järkkä’s graduation work for the University of Art and Design Helsinki studied woodfired ceramics. The interest towards woodfired ceramics started when she found a book about a museum collection of ancient Japanese woodfired ceramics. Spontaneously looking forms of bowls with a thick layer of glaze with many crawl and runoff marks made an impression. Those bowls were stunning, each one a unique piece. Interest towards the woodfiring technique took Mallu Järkkä for long residency periods to the USA and Canada, in where the spontaneous way of building ceramic art pieces was commonly found.

The pots and bowls in the vitrine are gathered from various woodfirings and woodfired kilns. Ceramic woodfiring process is a demanding and work intensive process, which is best done with your woodfiring colleagues.
